Where have driving manners gone on campus?

May 1, 2002 by Optimist Reader

Why are drivers in the ACU parking lots literally some of the rudest drivers I have ever come across? One would think that drivers on this Christian campus would be polite and respectful of the right of way of other drivers.

April 25, my husband and I were driving in the slip road, which runs parallel to Campus Court and is in the parking lot west of the library.

All of a sudden a white Buick pulled into the slip road from the parking lot with absolutely no concern that my husband and I were already driving up the slip road.

While we literally slammed on our breaks and had to come to a complete halt, and catch our breaths, mind you, the driver of the white Buick merely went on her merry way with not so much as showing an apology or that she had made an error in judgment.

I realize I am talking about an incident in a parking lot where common sense may rule more than the law of the road. However, the law does give the driver going straight the right of the way. It shouldn’t matter if the driver is driving on a road or in a parking lot.

Where have courtesy, respect, and driving manners gone, for goodness sake?

We all want to get home at 5 p.m. But hurrying out of the parking lot and paying no attention to where people are driving or who has the right of way may cause you to have an unwarranted and pointless accident.

To the driver of the white Buick, and to all those who don’t pay attention while they drive in the ACU parking lots, watch out-you’re going to cause an accident and probably end up making foes rather than friends! A little driving respect can go a long way.
