Our Voice: Editorial for Nov. 21, 2003

November 21, 2003 by Optimist Editorial Board

As the student body breaks for a day of giving thanks, the Optimist editorial board shares some unique things we are thankful for.

The essence of our country is being played out this week in the actions of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and the anger that has followed it.

Dissent is a healthy part of a free society, and whether that dissent be on campus to Optimist decisions or on a national scale protesting national policy, I am thankful that all Americans can safely express their opinions.

– Paul A. Anthony

At the end of a long semester, I’m thankful I can go home, relax … and laugh.

The importance of laughter is immeasurable-it reduces stress hormones, lowers blood pressure and can be aerobic; plus there are no side effects.

When life stresses me out and I need a break, laughter is my solution. This Thanksgiving I’m going to enjoy time with my family, and eat, sleep and be merry.

– Lori Bredemeyer

The book of James tells us that every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father. I’m convinced he meant to add, “especially coffee” to the end of that statement.

Even the aroma of cheap coffee transports me into a world of Folgers commercials where life is all smiles, sunshine and jingles.

Stephanie Piro said, “Behind every successful woman … is a substantial amount of coffee.” I think I need more.

-Melanie J. Knox

Dr. Charles Marler characterized his tendency to procrastinate best when he simply said it was his “love for deadlines.”

Deadlines burden me and make me lose sleep and miss meals, and yet they are the reason things get done.

Any amount of work can fill any available time, so I’m thankful I have deadlines to hurry that process along. They’re the reason I finished writing this.

– Jonathan Smith

Since March, they have served our country well in battle and through another country’s transition.

As of Monday, 417 of these brave men and women have lost their lives, mostly without provocation. I’m thankful for the soldiers who will spend their Thanksgivings uncomfortably in Iraq while we comfortably enjoy ours.

– Joel Weckerly
