Congress passed a bill to provide free bowling for students and received a reminder to stay involved at Wednesday’s Students’ Association Congress meeting.
The $600 bill, presented by senior senator Brandon Smith, will allow students to bowl for free one night per week for the remaining six weeks of the semester and comes from the $4,000 Congressional project fund.
Smith said he and a fellow freshman senator began providing free bowling when he was a freshman, and the tradition has continued every year.
The bill passed by voice vote.
Also at the meeting, Smith and freshman senator Danielle Urias also presented a list of impeachable Congress members.
The list included about 12 members but had not taken into account Congress members who have voted absentee. Representatives and senators can be impeached by Congress after four absences or if they have not completed their office hours. Smith said about 70 percent of Congress could be impeachable for office hours, but did not have a list of names.
In past years, involvement and enthusiasm seemed to have dwindled toward the end of the spring semester, but chief development officer Matt Greenberg said he hasn’t seen a drop in attendance- Wednesday’s meeting saw 33 attendees.
“Tonight we had good numbers,” Greenberg said.
For those who don’t show, president Matt Worthington said communication has to occur. Usually a Congress member who has stopped attending meetings will resign, but Congress does have the option to impeach a representative or senator.
“I think there’s a line that we draw,” Worthington said.
Greenberg said keeping people involved and participating involves planning ahead.
“I think it’s advance work,” he said.
And events such as the upcoming SA-sponsored Def Poetry Jam will require involvement from Congress, Worthington said.
