University looks to fill list of open positions

April 11, 2008 by Daniel Johnson-Kim

Several departments and programs are looking to hire.

According to the Web site for the Office of the Provost, there are 13 faculty positions open at ACU. There are openings for six vacant faculty positions in the College of Arts and Sciences; two in the College of Business Administration; three in the College of Education and Human Services; one in the School of Information Technology and Computing; and one in open spot in the Study Abroad Program.

Most of the positions are tenure-track and have been open for some time.

All applicants must be “professing Christians and be active, faithful members of a congregation of the Churches of Christ and willing to support the Christian mission and purpose of the university.” Positions also require applicants to havea doctorate or master’s degree in their respective areas of study.

With all the specific criteria, some departments have a hard time finding the fit, and some of the open positions have been vacant for several years. In addition to the university’s overall requirements, departments also have their own criteria for the open positions.

“At the end of the day the most important question we like to ask people is do you like to be around 18-23 year-olds?” said Bill Fowler, chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance. “And if you don’t, you’re not what we’re looking for.”

Fowler said his department is looking for two professors who not only have excellent teaching skills and are committed to research in their respective areas of study, but also developing relationships with their colleagues and students.

“If you don’t like to be around 18-23 year olds, you’re not our kind of person,” Fowler said. “We value our relationships with our students in and out of the classroom, so that becomes one of the key criteria.”

And finding applicants that fit the long list of criteria can be a long process. Fowler said the Accounting position has been vacant for almost five years and the Finance position open in his department has been open for almost two years. Fowler said finding someone who is qualified, a member of the Church of Christ and someone who wants to move to West Texas can be a daunting task.

“It’s a challenge; no question about it,” Fowler said.
