Student options for publicity dwindle

August 28, 2009 by Optimist Editorial Board

In the good, old days, walking around campus meant seeing the same flier taped to the sidewalk five times in five feet. It was during this time that the pastel colors of sidewalk chalk dotted ACU’s pathways, informing students of the next big campus activity. Sadly, those days are over.

Early last semester, the decision was made to prohibit students from posting fliers, advertisements and announcements on any sidewalk, door or wall on campus. The policy also bans the use of sidewalk chalk to promote campus activities. These changes were made in an attempt to improve the campus’ appearance; although, we believe the chalk on the sidewalks provided an artistic, creative way for students to let others know what was happening around campus.

Under the old system, it was easy for a student to make announcements. All he or she needed was a flier and tape or a bucket of chalk and a sidewalk. Now, in order for a student to post a flier in the kiosk, he or she must print it, obtain an approval stamp from the Office of Student Life or the Campus Center information desk and wait one business day for someone to open the locked kiosk and put the flier inside.

With that said, arguing with the new policy is not the answer. The answer is to use the kiosk to the fullest extent.

Students should post fliers in the kiosk as often as possible. Not only that, but they should visit the kiosk several times a day looking for new announcements and happenings. Students should flock to the kiosk after Chapel, anticipating the arrival of a new flier.

For better or worse, The kiosk is here. Use it. Use it until the administration is begging the student body to put its fliers somewhere else.

For more information on posting fliers, visit www.acu.edu/studentlife.
