Former ACU tennis greats rolled into town to meet the current teams at the tennis courts during the annual ACU Alumni Classic this weekend.

On Friday, the alumni were placed on teams with current Wildcats and played World Team Tennis-style with a few variations. They also played some singles games, as well as a doubles format Saturday, with current players matched up against alumni.

Roughly 20 former Wildcat tennis players came for a get-together and some friendly competition. This year, a large number of women returned, including all-American Lacey Johnson. Johnson was the LSC Women’s Singles Champion for the Wildcats in 2000 and Women’s Academic all-LSC in 2002.

Head coach Hutton Jones, whose son also played, said the match was a lot of fun and also useful for the current teams.

“It’s somewhat competitive,so it’s almost like getting a little bit of some practice competition,” Jones said.

Jones, who organized the event, did not play in the Alumni Classic.

Junior Natalie Friend, nutrition major from Tulsa, Okla., got the opportunity to play with the alumni.

“It was pretty casual because of the different skill levels, but we also realize that it is their time to play again,” she said.

The Alumni Classic is not a real tournament; it is played after the conference title and before the regional tournament. The games and get-togethers are mostly to keep ACU traditions alive and keep former students and players coming back to campus. Lunch was served after the match and after that, a golf game with any alumni who wanted to play. The alumni also had a meal together that night.

“People have reunions to re-union.” Jones said.
