October is the best time of the year

October 9, 2013 by Matthew Sloan

October plays host to Halloween, fall break and falling leaves. But most importantly, October is the best sports month of the year.

Conference games are being played for college football teams, the NFL is in full swing, hockey and basketball are on the way, American is winning the President’s Cup and we are right in the middle of the MLB postseason.

Simply put, October is sports heaven.

Saturday’s slate of college football games includes Georgia hosting a ranked Missouri team, Oregon on the road against No.16 Washington, Florida travelling to Death Valley and of course OU’s seemingly annual beat down of the boys in burnt orange.

With four or five games into a college football season there are still plenty of newcomers looking to keep their dream of a championship alive and many powerhouses with a clean record as well.

Flip to the NFL where games are becoming increasingly important, but nobody except the Jaguars are already thinking about draft day.

Also, fantasy football is heating up, meaning that millions of Americans are playing general manager and making decisions that could make them champions or the butt of their friend’s jokes for the next few months.

NHL hockey is back as well.  Even if hockey doesn’t have the same pull as some other sports, watching grown men run around on knives is enough to capture the attention of plenty of people’s attention on a slow night in the sports world.

The NBA is inching closer to tip off, and by the end of October gym rats everywhere will rejoice as they flip on TNT or Fox to watch Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Craig Sager getting a little crazy in the name of professional hoops.

For the golf fans out there, Americans claimed another President’s Cup with the help of a rowdy Ohio crowd and a surprisingly domesticated squirrel.

Watching professional golfers in a team format somehow reminds me of hitting the golf course with my friends, pairing up and playing for five dollars and the love of the game.

Last but not least, the MLB playoffs have delivered plenty of drama already. The legend of Clayton Kershaw continues to grow, the Rays cheat death on a nightly basis and the Pirates are in the playoffs for the first time since I was in diapers.

Something about watching the best players in the world compete, knowing that eight months of hard work come down to one swing or pitch is nerve-racking and magical at the same time.

So sit back and flip on the TV because what you are watching could be history in the making.
