Wildcats earn another home win

October 9, 2013 by Brittney Johnson

ACU women’s soccer team had their 10th victory and second loss of the season this past weekend.

The Wildcats took on Central Arkansas University on Oct. 4, ranked No. 5 in the Southland Conference, at home on the Wildcat Soccer Pitch.

The team went into the game focused and with heads held high, ending the Bears’ visit with a 2-1 victory.

At 5:14 on the clock, junior midfielder Madison Brown made ACU’s first goal with an assist from senior forward Andrea Carpenter.

The last goal for ACU came in the middle of the half by freshman forward/midfielder Natalie Thorneberry with an assist from senior defender/midfielder Whitley Lindholm.

It was Thorneberry’s fourth goal this season.

After a day of rest, the team returned to the Wildcat Soccer Pitch as they hosted Oral Roberts University Sunday, ranked No. 3 in the conference, Oct. 6.

The Cats fell 0-1 to the strong defense of the Eagles. This marks the second loss of the season for the Wildcats, after being defeated by Nicholls State University in late September.

The offense played hard with 16 shots on goal attempted.

“When we played Oral Roberts, we were a bit frantic in our play,”  Thorneberry said “We are continuing to focus on the little things. Our passes, our runs, everything we can do right, we are trying to do.”

Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Dombrowski had nine saves, a season high. She now totals 25 saves.

After the disappointing match against Oral Roberts, ACU is now 4-2 in conference, 10-2-1 overall and ranked No. 4.

The team will travel to Natchitoches, La., to match with the No. 7 Northwestern Univerity on Oct. 11.

Ending their weekend, they will head to Nacogdoches to challenge the No. 2 Stephen F. Austin State University on Oct. 13.

Brown said the team is fully aware of the challenges they will face the rest of this season.

“Both games this weekend will be tough,” Brown said. ” Northwestern will be looking for another win to advance to a higher standing and Stephen F. Austin State will be looking to defend theirs.”
