Search continues to fill interim positions

January 14, 2014 by Brittany Jackson

Candidates for the vice president of Student Life, director of Resident Life and vice president of Advancement positions continue to be evaluated.

The process of finding a VP of Student Life began in March 2013 when Jean-Noel Thompson took a post at Faulker University in Montgomery, Ala., and remains ongoing.

Dr. Jan Meyer filled the position two weeks before Thompson left and continues to serve as interim. During her time served, Meyer has dealt with a range of issues, such as dealing with budget cuts and communicating between students and the university.

Meyer also continues to serve as executive director of the Center for Christian Service and Leadership.

In the meantime, Mark Lewis, assistant dean of Spiritual Life, assumed some of the responsibilities Meyer was previously in charge of.

Dr. Allison Garrett, executive vice president of the university, formed a search committee for the position in February. The first meeting was on Feb. 25, with Anthony Williams as the head of the committee.

The search committee has been screening resumes and interviewing candidates for about 10 months. Several candidates have been invited to campus for interviews.

A post of director of Residence Life also opened up when John Delony left the position for Texas Tech in June. Curtis Smith, associate director of Residence Life and area coordinator for Edwards Hall, was appointed as the interim of the position.

Meyer has appointed a search committee for the position, which continues to screen applicants.

“With respect to the director of residence life process, I have great confidence in the search committee and the work that the search committee is doing to identify the best candidate to lead the Residence Life area,” Garrett said. “Curtis has done a really fine job as our interim director of Residence Life and we’ve been very appreciative of his willingness to step into that role.”

Lastly, the VP of Advancement, which opened up in the summer of 2013, is still looking to be filled.

A search committee was not formed, but President Schubert said several people would be consulted in the evaluation of candidates.

According to an Optimist article in August, President Phil Schubert said, “If it takes a week, a month, a year – we’ll take however long to find the right person for this position.”
