Buffalo Gap hosts new ‘Zombie Games’

April 22, 2014 by Dystanie Douglas

The Buffalo Gap Historical Village will have its third annual fundraising event, “The Zombie Games.”

The Zombie Games is a family-friendly, team-building apocalypse game that combines acts as seen on The Walking Dead, the Hunger Games and Survivor. Participants will work together in physical and mental challenges to gather supplies, solve puzzles and out-wit the other camps as they race to the finish.

Heather Reed, site manager of Buffalo Gap Historical Village, is organizing the event.

“The reason why we decided to have games this year is to be able to reach more of our visitors who weren’t necessarily able to participate in a 5K, but were able to play a game and experience the fun of an apocalypse,” Reed said.

Reed said they took other themes into account for the fundraiser as well.

“There are many of us here who are into The Walking Dead and zombies,” Reed said. “It is just an interest between several of us and the more and more we talked and visited with our volunteers and our guests, we realized there are a lot of people interested.”

All proceeds from the event will be used to support the preservation of the Buffalo Gap Historic Village.

In previous years, Buffalo Gap Historical Village has raised more than $12,000 with each fundraiser and had more than 500 participants.

“I think this year is going to be the best year yet,” Reed said. “There is just so much interest, and so many people involved.”

This year, the Village is adding another portion to the event which will cater to college students.

“We are adding a university portion,” Reed said. “The last game of the day is going to be the University Brawl. We are encouraging all four universities in Abilene to come out and compete against one another to see which college is the ultimate zombie hunter.”

Students look forward to putting their zombie skills to the test.

“I am a huge fan of The Walking Dead, so I am so excited to go out there and see if the stuff I watch on TV works in real life,” said Claire Carmichael, sophomore business management major from Haskell.

The Zombie Games will take place Saturday, April 26 at 9 a.m. The price is $35 for individuals, $30 for students, $30 for BGHV members and $100 for teams of four. Spectators are welcome to come and watch. To register, call (325)572-3365 or register online at www.buffalogap.com. Registration ends April 18.
