ACU to continue win streak against UCA

October 2, 2014 by Hannah Little

The women’s soccer team will travel to Arkansas to take on the University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears.

The Wildcats will go into the game standing at No. 4 with a 2-1 record in conference.

The Sugar Bears are 1-1 in conference after losing 0-2 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and defeating Northwestern State University 2-0.

ACU swept Nicholls and the defending Southland Conference tournament champions, Southeastern Louisiana University, last weekend. Baylee Mitchell, freshman forward from Flower Mound, was the Wildcats’ top scorer contributing one goal in each game.

Mitchell tallies seven goals on the season as has stepped in to fill big shoes. Mitchell’s goal is to bring forth a fresh drive to the team.

“As a freshman, a goal is to bring in something new for the team that they have never seen before,” Mitchell said. “I think as a forward, just creating chances to get shots on goal or setting up other people to score goals as well.”

The Wildcats will look to continue their two-game win streak this weekend and keep improving as a whole as they competes against UCA. Last season, the two teams dueled for the first time, ACU winning 2-1.

“For improvement, I think just little simple things on the field,” Mitchell said. “There are times where we aren’t communicating as well or passes were off.”

Alyssa Gerner, sophomore defender from San Antonio, will rely on mental toughness as well as physical preparation going into the game.

“I think they’re going to be really good,” Gerner said. “I like to go into games not knowing much about the team, but playing as hard as I can and adjusting to how the team plays.”

Gerner was just named Southland Conference defensive player of the week as she contributed to an assist and the game-winning goal in the 70th minute against Nicholls State University.

“UCA is going to be a strong team,” she said. “Most of the teams in conference are strong but every game is winnable if we all show up.

The matchup between the Wildcats and the Sugar Bears will start at 7 p.m. Friday.
