Soccer to welcome New Mexico State Sunday

ACU soccer will host New Mexico State Sunday afternoon for its third home game of the season.

This will be the first matchup ever between the Wildcats and New Mexico State.

The Wildcats are 2-2 on the season, while the Aggies remain winless at 0-4.

Although the Aggies have lost every game of the season, the team has managed to score at least one goal in every game played, except for one. The four goals that have been scored by seniors Samantha Afonso and Aileen Galicia.

The Wildcats are 2-0 at home so far this season,  and junior redshirt goalkeeper Rachel Johnson played a big part in her team’s success, being named Southland goalkeeper of the week.

Johnson was excited and gained more confidence when she found out she was given the recognition.

“I was honored enough to be named Southland goalkeeper of the week,” Johnson said.

Johnson had her second shutout of the year and third of her career last Friday night against UTRGV. She had eight saves that night and then another seven against Texas Tech Sunday night. Although, she let her first goal in Sunday, she had a total of 15 saves last week alone.  

She said the team’s next game will be a hard-fought battle.

“Our next game will be challenging,” said Johnson. “We are all working hard to prepare for it both mentally and physically.”

ACU is currently fifth in the Southland Conference so far, and will try to move up to second with a win.  

Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
