Cross country competes in Southland Championships

October 26, 2018 by B. J. Maxwell Jr.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams competed this past weekend in Lake Charles, Louisiana at the Southland Conference cross country championships at McNeese State.

Junior Runner Carnley Graham repeated as a Second Team All-Southland Honoree after placing sixth at the Championships in the women’s 6K race.

The Men’s team placed ninth at this year’s Championships, they placed seventh at last year’s event. Freshman runner Levi Chambers placed a team-best 25th at the event. He finished with a time of (28:01) to lead the way for his team. Freshman Kevin Kipkosgei also placed 43rd at the event, while Senior Travis Nichols placed 61st in the meet.

The women’s team finished eighth at this year’s event. While Junior Carnley Graham garnered a top 20 finish in the 6K, the women’s team had multiple members place. Sophomore Briahna Gerlach placed 35th, while Sophomore Soren Underwood and Freshman Loren Rivera respectively garnered 52nd and 75th finishes.

“The conference race was very competitive,” said Gerlach. “Our team didn’t place exactly where we wanted but the course made us stronger individually and as a team. I would not have wanted to race with any other girls during conference and it was an experience we can grow from.”

They will be back in action on Nov. 9 in the NCAA South Central Regional Championships that will take place at Texas A&M.
