Men’s basketball claims first Southland tournament title with win over UNO

March 17, 2019 by Max Preston

The Wildcats captured their first-ever Southland Conference postseason title with a 77-60 win over New Orleans Saturday evening and will also advance to the NCAA Div. I tournament for the first time in school history.

With the win, the Wildcats move to 27-6 overall which ties the school record of wins in a season set by the 1979-80 team.

Senior forward Jaren Lewis led ACU with 20 points in the game on 10-17 shooting and also grabbed six rebounds.

Lewis was also named MVP of the tournament after a 17 point against Southeastern Louisiana Friday night.

Senior guard Jaylen Franklin finished with 16 points while senior forward Hayden Farquhar and freshman forward Joe Pleasant had 14 each. Freshman guard Damien Daniels was impressive on defense with five steals.

The men will now wait to see their seeding and who they’ll match up against in the NCAA tournament tomorrow at 5 p.m. when Selection Sunday begins.
