Sigma Delta Pi produces annual Hispañiola magazine

February 19, 2019 by Ashley Alfred

Sigma Delta Pi will release their annual magazine, Hispañiola, to the public on April 11.

Hispañiola magazine includes pieces and photographs from members and nonmembers of Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish honor society. The magazine is composed of creative pieces such as short stories, poetry, non-fiction pieces and essays.

Photos will also be included, primarily those taken by students while studying abroad in Montevideo, Uruguay. Multiple Spanish majors and minors also contributed work to the magazine.

Yesenia Soria, senior management major from Pampa and Sigma Delta Pi historian, said the majority of Sigma Delta Pi members participate by having a piece published in the magazine.

“Every year we invite all students and professors at ACU to send in a Spanish piece or photograph of a Spanish-speaking country to be published in Hispañiola,” Soria said. “Right now, we have entries from a wide array of people that we are very excited to include.”

Sigma Delta Pi is still promoting the magazine and inviting people to send in entries. When received, entries are sent to Dr. Beatriz Walker, professor in the department of language and literature, for approval. Walker reads and edits the pieces before approving them for publication.

When the process is complete, Walker sends a certificate to the creator of the work to inform them that their work has been approved.

“Hispañiola is meant to encourage the learning and use of Spanish on ACU’s campus,” Soria said. “It’s an opportunity for anyone, regardless of major or primary language, to gain experience and become published.”

Soria said this edition of the magazine will be a special edition, as this year Sigma Delta Pi will reach its 100th anniversary.

The upcoming edition will also include a dedication to Paloma Cavazos, ACU alumna and former officer of Sigma Delta Pi and Hispanos Unidos, who died over the summer.

The newest edition of Hispañiola will be presented during Sigma Delta Pi’s initiation ceremony and centennial celebration at the Grace Museum.

“Hispañiola allows [Sigma Delta Pi] to promote our organization and spread awareness of the awesome ways students and faculty can interact with the language here on campus,” Soria said.

To submit an entry to Hispañiola, students can send entries to acusdp@gmail.com
