This year’s Summit to display student artwork

February 6, 2009 by Linda Bailey

By Linda Bailey, Student Reporter

The Office of Ministry Events is collecting original artwork by students to display during this year’s Summit.

Dr. Brady Bryce, director of Ministry Events, said students have until Feb. 15 to take an active role in Summit by submitting artwork that visually communicates the theme On the Mountain with God: Exodus Expedition. The office will choose one student’s artwork to be used in some form of advertising for the event, and the student will receive $100.

“I really like the mountain theme because a mountain is a place where people talk with God or are present with God in nature,” Bryce said. “The mountain or summit was the place where God’s people came to worship, and I think people today can connect to the summit as a metaphor for meeting God.”

Jack Maxwell, chair of the Department of Art and Design, assigned students in his printmaking class a project based on the idea of mountains in preparation for the contest. He said he wanted to take advantage of the chance to involve students in Summit.

“I think we should do all we can to involve the arts in Summit, and they have been very supportive of that,” Maxwell said.

He said he would like to see the coordinators of Summit put together an exhibition of the many submitted pieces of art.

“I think it would be inspiring for visitors and an honor for students who are selected,” Maxwell said.

Bryce said the contest was designed to give students one more opportunity to participate in Summit. So far, they have received entries of paintings, watercolors, original artwork, photos and drawings.

“It is a creative way that students are making this event theirs,” Bryce said. “In the past, sometimes they felt on the outside, but here, not only are they helping choose who comes and what topics we talk about, but what the actual look of the event is.”

All entries must be submitted electronically to the Ministry Events office at summit@acu.edu.
