Response to sin should be love

March 21, 2003 by Optimist Reader

The other day my friend discovered something disturbing. It was a card with the definition for the word vile on one side and a scripture denouncing homosexuality on the other.

I do not know what the attempt of the person was who wrote these cards, but if it were to save those stuck in that sin, then they went about it in the wrong way.

One of my closest friends is a homosexual. He’s been told on numerous occasions that he is going to hell and that what he is doing is wrong.

These occasions have not fostered a search for the truth. After this happens, he usually feels depressed or angry. The sad thing is people do not tell him about the love of Christ.

He has never been told why he should stop doing something that is a part of him.

No, he was not born that way, but his environment did make him that way. The choice he has is whether or not to act on his attraction to males. The emphasis should be on his termination of the sin instead of a conversion to heterosexuality which many people promote.

Rather than approach him or anyone who is homosexual with the theology of damnation, we should show them the love that Christ showed the adultress when the townspeople wanted to stone her.

The message of condemnation is what the Pharisees preached. Jesus neither condemned nor condoned their sins as he directed them to leave their sinful lifestyle.

In my opinion (I am not an authority on this, by any means), we should love the sinners, hate the sin, and guide them towards freedom from that sin to Christ’s open arms.
