Men’s golf finishes 17th in first tournament of the season

September 12, 2024 by Hayden DeLand

The men’s golf team completed its first tournament of the season, the Argent Financial Classic and the Wildcats finished 17th out of 18th, going 32 strokes over par.

Jaime Lewis, senior from Johannesburg, South Africa, was the highest finisher for ACU. He ended the tournament in a four-way tie for 48th out of 97th, going seven strokes over par.

“I thought I played OK for the first round, and the second round I thought I did a lot of good things but struggled a little bit with certain areas of my game,” said Lewis. “And in the last round, it was just not my best day, struggled a bit to convert. Just try to learn from what happened and try to push on for the next event.”

The other competitors for ACU were Preston Defriend, sophomore from Lubbock, Thomas Buisson, junior from Bordeaux, France, Trenton Johnson, senior from Brentwood, Tennessee, and Brian Comegys, junior from The Hills.

Defriend and Johnson both finished in a six-way tie for 51st, going eight over par, Buisson finished in a seven-way tie for 57th going nine over par, and Comegys finished 93rd going 21 over par.

Overall, the Wildcats did not perform as they had hoped in this tournament, one in which they finished sixth last year.

“I thought our team performance was not what we hoped for,” said Lewis. “I think that we have a lot to improve on for the next event, I think some things caught us by surprise and at the end of the day it wasn’t our best performance, but we’ll keep pushing and trying to improve for next time.”

The Wildcats’ next tournament will be the Bayou City Collegiate Classic hosted by Rice University in Houston, starting on Sept. 30. The team will look to improve and hope to have a better finish in the next tournament.

“We look at areas of deficiency, we look at our stats, we try and find solutions and we look for the problems initially,” Lewis said. “It’s not all just emotional after a week like that, it’s more so trying to find ways to improve where it’s constructive and then we’ll be making the adjustments we need to and focusing on certain areas, focusing on areas that the next event will require us to be really good at.”

Several ACU students were removed from the seating behind the Utah Valley bench late in the fourth quarter while arguing with UVU fans. After a conversation with ACUPD and other staff members, they were relocated to the stands near the UVU bench on the south baseline.

An altercation occurred between Associate Head Coach Yannick Denson and UVU Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Josh Morzelewski ahead of the 1 p.m. tip. The playing surface was mopped less than an hour before tip, while the Wolverines were completing their pregame warmups.
