The men and women’s tennis teams took on the biggest event of the fall season this weekend with the ITA Texas regionals. The men took on Rice University while the women were at Texas A&M in College Station.
Standouts for the men in singles included junior Nico Agritelley, sophomore Hunter Holman, and freshmen Sebastian Langdon and Joshua Sheehy. Agritelley played the best out of the four, making it to the consolation championship match and winning by a score of 6-1, 6-0 against Charlie Nettlefold out of Southern Methodist.
Holman, Langdon, and Sheehy all had big victories in the first two rounds of the consolation bracket before they took close losses in the third round. In doubles, the team of sophomore Cole Lawson and Holman stood out, as they took the victory, 8-5, in the first round against a pair out of Lamar.
“The competition was stronger than anything I have seen all year, and every player there was capable of winning the tournament,” Lawson said. “Normally you can count on a couple players to be weaker than the rest, but in this tournament, no such players existed. I am thankful to have the opportunity to compete at such a high level, a level that I know we deserve to compete at.”
The women’s team traveled to College Station and were successful overall. Seniors Kaysie Hermsdorf and Nada Marjanovic, and sophomore Lucile Pothier all had strong outings. Pothier and Hermsdorf made it to the round of 32 in the main draw bracket. Pothier beat athletes out of Sam Houston State University and Texas before losing to Alexandra Valenstein out of Texas Tech.
Hermsdorf won against the University of Texas- Arlington and Texas State before she was beat out to Rutuja Bhosale of Texas A&M. Marjanovic made it to the second round of the main draw bracket defeating Ema Barkovic from SHSU before she lost to Lynn Kiro out of Texas Tech.
In doubles, Pothier and junior Erin Walker stood out as they took a first round victory before being eliminated in the second round. All the other pairs lost in the first round.
“This past weekend was a great way to end my last fall regionals as a senior,” Hermsdorf said. “I felt like a really strong competitor and played some of my best tennis to make it to the main draw third round in singles. I came into the tournament being focused and determined to do great things for ACU.”
The teams continue their schedules with the Grand Canyon invitational in Phoenix, Arizona on November 6.
