Intramural sports spring into action for 2008

January 18, 2008 by Daniel Johnson-Kim

By Daniel Johnson, Sports Editor

The intramural department wasted little time getting the spring schedule started and plans to offer six intramural sports for the spring semester.

The sports offered are a 3- on-3 basketball tournament, waterball, 5-on-5 basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and outdoor soccer. Unlike the fall, intramural fees were not raised for the spring.

Intramural softball restarted Thursday after the season was halted at the end of the fall semester. Playoffs are scheduled to begin Sunday after the regular season games are completed Saturday.

A 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be the first sport after softball is completed, and the deadline to sign up and pay the $35 is Friday.

Waterball, traditionally a fall semester sport, will be a full-season sport and starts Jan. 28. The deadline to sign up is Jan. 24.

Three special events – the ACU rodeo, a two-person golf scramble and a four-person team bowling – will also be available for student participation. The rodeo is on April 17, and dates have not yet been set for the golf scramble and bowling competition.

Although the intramural department was only able to complete one full sport and part of another during the fall semester, Susan Hardcastle, intramural department administrative coordinator, said they are optimistic about the spring, but nothing is certain.

Hardcastle said since the department does not have control of the facilities they use for the sports, the schedule is subject to change.

“We’re at the mercy of the facilities,” Hardcastle said.
